This is a great YA book written in a lively style with a mix of the story told by protagonist Nikki along with a mix of diary style entries and thoughts. The one thing I struggled with a little was the pacing - I thought I knew where it was going when they started the road trip but that quickly got complicated. However a bad goodbye, just as she is all set to leave, means Mal convinces her to give him a week to change her mind and get her to stay with her friends and her family. I haven’t read a book from this author before, so it’s good that i’ve discovered her and am able to sense whether she is a good author for my sense of reading style, which i believe she is. A big part of Mal’s and Nikki’s friendship happens before this story and that sort of already established relationship is always tricky to pull off, but I thought it was done well.

I like how we got to explore all aspects of Nikki’s emotions, from the hate she has for her mother (rightfully so), the love, the anger. She is constantly at war with her mother and after an epic row erupts involving her sister Vae she is determined to quit Texas and go to. This is a story of love; romantic, familial and all the complexities that comes with such a big emotion. When her best friend, Malachai, discovers her plan, he begs her to spend the remainder of spring break with him, so he can show her all the reasons she should stay in Texas.from the beginning, it’s clear that nikki has feelings for mal, but unfortunately he just started dating someone else. In high school, she challenged herself with to-do lists full of risk-taking items like ‘hug a random boy’ and ‘eat a cricket,’ which inspired her debut novel.

But, it does add a layer of complexity that may be useful in starting further discussions with young readers surrounding such a sensitive topic. Which is such a kudos to the author's skill - that she's able to let her characters make mistakes without making them horrible people- absolutely love to see it. Mal's attempts to convince her not to leave is derailed by the disappearance of her sister Vai, Loved the connections between the characters.After a big fight and a betrayal from her sister, her mom kicks her out of the house, and she decides to flee to California and try her career in music.

This novel My Week With Him, is from the author of Excuses Me While I Cry and Confession of an Alleged Good Girl, which are now on my to read list! It was such a simple question but the weight it held- it felt like a very pivotal moment for all the characters, it was an acknowledgment that she didn't deserve the abuse, it was the heart-breaking realisation that she still on some level blames herself, but it also felt like an answer - there was no reason, there never is a valid one.Will Nikki find a reason to stay in Texas, or will this spring break be the last time she sees them? This particular fiction novel, My Week With Him, definitely contains themes that some readers may find upsetting, I was one of those readers. Until her best friend and long-time crush, Malachai, discovers her plan and convinces her to spend spring break with him, so he can show her all the reasons she should stay in Texas. The romance was so cute between Malachi and Nikki, but as always, Joya’s books always have a message.
